A look at one more free tool for fighting spyware.

We’re always on the lookout for good anti-spyware, anti-adware and anti-virus tools, and it always pleases us when we can talk about tools that are free or open source.

We haven’t had time yet to really put this one to the test, but on first glance it appears to be a solid offering and we’ve seen some good things said about it by current users, so we offer it here as something for you to review and consider for yourself.

.

Spyware Terminator – Free Spyware Protection

by Ryano

Spyware Terminator is offered as a free spyware remover. It is free to download and to use, you will never be charged for it. Spyware Terminator aims to provide spyware search and destroy function and still find and stop viruses. In order to successfully perform spyware search and destroy tasks the software utilizes advanced technologies all of which are free to you, the user. I downloaded this software and I have begun using it, so below I will outline my findings. First I’d like to mention that while this is a very comprehensive suite of spyware seek and destroy utilities, it is available for free, meaning no cost to try, use, or keep it.

Spyware Terminator uses many technologies to keep your computer safe from everyday threats. Features like fast spyware scanning, real time protection, HIPS protection, and antivirus protection work in a brilliant symphony to protect you and your personal data. Fast spyware scanning usually means fast spyware search and destroy. I found this software to be both effective and user friendly. In case you are wondering, HIPS stands for host intrusion prevention. The program creates a database of executable files on your hard disk and monitors their behavior, if they get out of line; a warning is displayed prompting user interaction. To facilitate more robust spyware search and destroy, Spyware Terminator includes ClamWin, which is the Windows version of ClamAV, an open source highly regarded antivirus program. In addition to those features, Spyware Terminator is one of the only free spyware removal software packages to offer free scheduled scanning, which is a feature that is usually found on software that costs a bit of money. Another feature of Spyware terminators which contributes a lot to its spyware search and destroy success is its automatic updates.

Spyware terminator allows the user to select a time to update the software, it is configurable so it can update every day, week, or when you tell it to. This is another nice feature which is typically found on software costing lots more. Finally, we reach Spyware Terminator’s final great selling point, the support for it is free. When Spyware Terminator is having trouble performing its principle role “spyware search and destroy”, you can e-mail tech support and at no cost to you, they will help you figure out what is going on. Really, this is a very robust spyware seek and destroy package and it’s completely free.

In addition to the many threats and security risks that your computer faces, there’s also the annoying element of unwanted advertising being thrown at you right on your Desktop.

I’m not talking about the advertising that you see on web sites you visit, even if you find those annoying (and many do), they help to keep the content that you enjoy free and help foster the constant creation of fresh new content for you. Let’s face it, site owners and bloggers who provide high quality content deserve (and often need) some compensation for their time and efforts, so on-site advertising is something we should all be able to deal with in most cases.

No, what I’m talking about here is Adware programs that are placed on your PC, often without you even knowing about it, that throw false error messages, virus detections or just plain blatant advertising pop-ups in your face.

Image by Javier Aroche via Flickr

Unlike on-site advertising where you essentially allow and accept the site owners to show you their advertising, Adware software is malicious and not permissions based by any sense.

But there are ways to deal with it, and this article I found today is pretty good for explaining some of your options.

.

.

Remove Adware to speed up Computer

Adware is a type of advertising display software. If we describe specifically, it is a type of executable program. The sole intension of these programs is delivering advertising content in such a format that can be redundant as well as unexpected for the computer users.

Adware is a rampant problem and irritating enough in today’s age of computers. Once your PC gets infected with adware you will constantly receive annoying pop ups which also reduce your PC speed. The people who usually design adware want to make money through this malicious business.

It can take a long time to remove adware threat manually from computers but even this is not a guaranteed process. Adware are formatted in such a way so that it can be difficult for the users to remove it. Even if you manage to remove the threat for some time, it not only has the chance of returning, but also you are open to the new threats also.

One of the best ways to protect your computer from adware and other malicious threats is to install anti adware software. In addition to removing present threats, well-designed antivirus or anti spyware software should be installed. It will prevent new infections and automatically scan the system and update files.

While choosing an anti adware program you should check that the software performs a scheduled scan and provides real time protection. It is the main feature of good quality anti adware software. A cheap anti adware software will not provide real time protection. It will only remove infections once they turn up.

There are a number of programs which, in spite of having installed properly, enter into the system carrying loads of annoying ads. As you install those programs they leave certain codes on your PC which starts throwing ads wherever they wish. Routine scans are necessary to avoid such situation. It will help to detect and eliminate these and present you a popup free PC and web browsing experience.

My friend has taken her Laptop to a local shop for security “clean ups” 5 times in the last year because she believed it had been compromised by either a virus or some form of spyware. Each clean up trip costing her $74.95

That’s almost $400 in one year to do what she probably could have done herself in just a few minutes with the right software helper, many of which can be purchased for under $100.

Here is some more information on how almost anybody can do their own security clean ups and save some money:

.

Virus Help and Spyware Removal…how company’s profit off you!

by James Plewak

The truth about how to remove viruses and spyware.

Are you technologically challenged? Do you pay large electronic stores for “tune-ups” and virus removal? Unfortunately any company that charges you money to remove your viruses is taking advantage of your lack of knowledge. Removing viruses and cleaning out malware are the common problems faced with people today.

First of all, to remove malware you don’t need any sort of certification or programming expertise, all you need is a good virus removal program and a search engine. Here are the simple steps needed to remove a virus for people who really don’t know how things work.

1) Purchase effective software that doesn’t take up a lot of system resources. (Information on anti virus products and other software at bottom of page)

2) Install the software with its easy to follow step by step installation procedures.

3) Run the software’s entire system scans.

4) Follow the software’s virus removal steps…

Sounds just a little to simple…

That is basically what the people you pay 50$ to 100$ do to remove your viruses. Kind of frustrating isn’t it? However not ALL viruses are that simple to remove, that is where google comes into play. Simply google what the virus may be doing, from moving your cursor to closing your web browser, and there are guides posted by other people for removing the virus! My website will recommend to you the best products and helpful guides to remove viruses.

When you encounter a virus that your software is not able to remove, first you have to find out what kind of virus you are dealing with. Once you have done your research into google on your computer’s symtoms, you just have to bombard your system with anti malware software. When your computer gets a virus you basicly treat it as that bad cold you got before you had a big day at work.

You woke up in the morning, feeling awful, and took as many cold medications, remedy’s, tea’s and decongestants that you thought your body could handle. Similarly with a virus you just install some free and some very inexpensive products and run them all over the course of the day, any virus that is in your system, will be removed!

James D. Plewak offers computer tips, help and product recommendations to optimize speed, safety and security. Visit Virus help and removal for more information, helpful tips, post questions or find products.

Since one of our main focuses here is on helping people enjoy a safe and secure computing experience we’re always on the lookout for thorough product reviews.

The Kaspersky Internet Security Suite is one that we don’t hear much about, and while sometimes that can indicate that a software isn’t well liked, it can also just means that it works and nobody is complaining.

We believe that is the case here, and present this review by Mike Selvon for you.

.

Reviewing The Kaspersky Internet Security Suite

by Mike Selvon

Almost daily, the news is filled with reports of new types of threats to computers. It is increasingly important for PC owners to be proactive and make sure that they have software installed and running that can help keep their computers safe. While there are many such programs on the market, the Kaspersky internet security package has gained one of the highest ratings for this category of and is considered one of the best ways to protect a personal computer system.

Technology continues to advance rapidly, especially in terms of how people can access the internet and the types of information and multimedia that is available online. At the same time, because of the way that the internet is evolving so quickly, the internet threats that are posed to computer users by “cyber criminals” and determined hackers is also advancing steadily and it is important to stay on top of the current internet security trends in order to stay ahead of these digital miscreants.

The Kaspersky internet security package is sophisticated software that provides a number of essential features that can significantly reduce the risk of exposure and infection of your computer by internet viruses. This alone helps to improve the internet security protection that you can enjoy, but the Kaspersky software doesn’t stop there.

The fact is that computer viruses are not the only internet threat these days, nor are they the only tool that cyber criminals use to hack into your personal computer and your life. Other common internet threats are found in things such as phishing schemes and spyware, and hackers who are intent on cracking into your system to search for sensitive financial information or information that will allow them to steal your identity.

If your computer is hacked into by one of these internet gangsters, then any sensitive personal information on your computer, including passwords to your bank accounts and other important data, can easily be accessed and used to steal your identity. The statistics clearly show that identity theft is on the rise, right along with computer internet security issues. It is quickly becoming one of the most common crimes in America.

The Kaspersky security suite will automatically scan any website files and all emails for any type of malware. These are malicious programs that pose threats to your internet safety and these programs come in the form of spyware, adware, and various viruses that are constantly being developed in an attempt to get past the protection internet security you might have in place.

With all of these constant internet threats in mind, the Kaspersky internet security software is programmed to check with the publisher’s website every hour for any new updates and security downloads. As long as the computer is on and has access to the internet, these updates will be automatically downloaded, providing the highest level of protection from new viruses and malware of any company that offers internet security software. Getting such frequent updates will keep your computer protected from even the very latest virus attacks.

One of the most common problems we see with people’s PCs is slow or degraded system performance, and the primary causes of this that we encounter are badly fragmented hard drives and bloated, error filled system registry files.

The Windows operating system comes with a handy tool for fixing fragmented hard drives. It’s called Disk Defragmenter and usually found by going to your Start Menue, then All Programs, Accessories and finally System Tools.

Just run the program, select your hard drive and start the defragmenting process.

It can take a little while to run depending on the size of your hard drive and percentage of fragmentation to be cleaned, but it’s worth the wait to let it finish.

For optimal performance we suggest running this utility once per week. If you do that it will run faster each time because you haven’t allowed the hard drive to become overly fragmented since the last run, and you should notice an increased performance on your machine.

Unfortunately, for the registry Windows doesn’t come with an easy clean-up utility for the average user, but there are several good ones on the market. We’ve talked about a few of them here in the past, so here’s an article on one we haven’t mentioned before.

.

Does Xp Repair Pro Really Repair Your PC Errors?

by Harry Wilhelm

A new pc or computer, like a new car is fast when you first bring it home, but after a few miles it slows down and can leave you stranded. Registry Cleaner software is like the best car mechanic; it can diagnose problems, fix broken down components, free up stuck mechanisms and get your computer back to speeding down the Internet highway. You want to scan and optimize your registry, right? But there’s a ton of different products out there. Well relax. The XP Repair Pro is different from the others. It is not just a registry repair too. It has together an advanced registry editor, crash monitor and a startup program manager.

XP Repair Pro is a popular system utility that is designed to allow any computer user to quickly and easily repair common errors that occur in Windows and thousands of other software titles. Whether you are experiencing system errors, system lockups or if your computer just seems to be running slowly, XP Repair Pro’s useful tools will help revive your PC without having to spend hundreds of dollars to a computer tech to do what you can do yourself. With just the click of a button, you can quickly restore your computer back to its like new condition.

XP Repair Pro offeres the Stop-Starting feature that acts as a start-up manager. Another useful feature is the Advanced Registry Editor that allows manual adaptation of registry settings. This though is probably best used with a good deal of knowledge of how a Windows registry works and most people will not even use it.

Another great feature of this Registry Cleaner is that it offers live updates. What this means is that the program will check for updates each time you run it and install the updates, rather than making you have to go to the website and download these updates manually.

The XP Repair Pro has one of the best support structures of any registry cleaner. The internet site linked to the registry repair program is full of information about how to work the program and also other frequently asked questions. Additionally there is a system where support tickets can be completed to ask about technical issues.

Some people I’ve talked with say they’ve been a little confused when trying to select protective software to use on their PC’s. One person said it best, “it seems like there’s almost as many different programs for protecting your computer as there are viruses trying to infect it”.

That’s not exactly true, but I’m sure it can seem that way to anyone who wants protection but isn’t sure on which software might be right for them.

So, I found this great article that talks about common needs and features in modern Antivirus applications, and how you can judge them for yourself when picking a program.

I would just emphasize that there’s really no wrong choice you can make other than having nothing to protect your computer and information, and you can always change what you’re using at any time if something doesn’t work with or fit your needs.

.

How To Choose Best Antivirus Solutions

by Mike Selvon

These days there are a number of choices that people have when they need to purchase internet security software packages to protect their computers from online threats. People can choose to visit some websites and get trial versions of security downloads before purchasing a full program, or they can simply go into a retail store and buy the software installation disk. Regardless of which method of acquiring the software is preferred, the question still remains for most people, “What is the best antivirus software available and which should they choose?”

In most cases, the antivirus internet security protection software that is published today comes with good warranties, guarantees and a strong level of customer support to help the computer user deal with any serious issues that might arise because of the various internet threats that are posed to their systems. Because of this level of support, many PC owners are most comfortable with an antivirus internet security suite from a highly reputable company.

But, there is a strong contingent of people who are convinced that the best antivirus software packages are the ones that are freely available to computer users. Indeed, there are many different, free internet security systems available that can be found at any of the numerous software download websites or through various software discussion forums. Often, software publishers will have free versions of their software available on the sites as well.

In some cases, the software publishers offer a limited time trial in order to allow the PC user to try out the software. This is a great benefit for computer users who are often overwhelmed by the sheer number of options they have to choose from.

Typically, the company will allow you to use a full version of their software for a limited time, such as two weeks or 30 days. At the end of that period, you must purchase a license in order to continue using their security software.

The biggest advantage to these trials periods is that the user has the opportunity to get a “feel” for the software and to see if they are able to run it easily. They can test the user interface and see if it is intuitive or if it was designed more for computer geeks and engineers than for the average computer user.

In most cases, these companies also offer at least a minimum level of support while the user is testing their software. This is done with the hope that the user will be pleased with both the software and the customer support so that they will decide to make the purchase of the internet safety antivirus package.

Another way that some of the software companies allow people to test out their computer internet security software is to allow them to use a limited or “lite” version. Typically, the limited version will provide some functions that the full software features, but will have many of the advanced features disabled. In most cases, these limited versions have no time limitation on them, but simply do not provide the full level of protection that computer users should have.

Once the PC owner has had the chance to test drive the security suite software in one of these ways, they will be able to determine for themselves which is the best antivirus package for them. While testing the software to see how it handles threats, it is also a good idea to research the software publisher to know if they are reliable and if they have a good track record for providing good customer service.

Most of the latest web browsers have some form of pop-up blocking embedded in them which is usually enabled by default, so the annoyance of pop-ups has been largly trimmed over the last year or so.

But still there are a lot of people using older browsers for whatever reasons, and some marketers have found creative ways of skirting around the default blockers in their codes.

So, if you’re one of the folks who can’t seem to stop pop-ups most of the time here’s a quick piece that just might help you.

.

Pop-Up Blocking, Honest Advice and Reviews

by Nigel Fryatt

With the development of the internet, new marketing and advertising methods have been used in an attempt to catch internet consumers even when they aren’t browsing. Pop-up’s are not only annoying, they are embarrassing. How are you meant to explain to your partner, or boss, why you’re viewing a ‘one month free trial pornography banner’ Many people who aren’t educated in pop-ups don’t understand them, and will simply assume you really were trying to get that free trial.

Pop-ups mainly occur when you’re browsing the internet online, if not your in serious trouble. You may have a form of Adware, which means your screen gets completely covered in ads. If you’re interested you can view my anti-adware site where I promote and review adware prevention software on behalf of their developers, http://frynig.bezoogle.com/pp/adware/. If you’re not interested, then that’s fine, I’m here mainly to talk about pop-up prevention. You may already use a pop-up blocker then if so, you’ve got no need to read on although I strongly advise you do. Pop-up blockers allow you to stop pop-ups all together. Whilst your trying to watch films, no more little ads popping up in the middle. Whilst you’re in the middle of work, no more ads. Whilst your playing games online or chatting to friends, no more ads. It’s simple, you find a good quality pop-up prevention program and all the bother, annoyance and aggravation disappears.

Are pop-up prevention programs really worth it? Yes, many people have been known to completely destroy their laptops or computers because of pop-ups, they just can’t take the strain of pop-ups whilst trying to do things they want to do. Would you rather pay out for a new laptop/computer or spend very little on a high quality pop-up blocker. I’m not here to sell you these programs however; I just merely think it is an extremely worthwhile investment. I use them on a daily basis and I’ve been able to write this whole article without a single disruption.

I work within the pop-up prevention and adware field so I have great knowledge of the effects of both. I work on behalf of software developers to review their products and I get money for referring people to their websites. This is how I make my living; I’m not going to lie, but I only promote the most high quality programs. If you genuinely want to stop pup-ups then check out my anti pop-up review site http://frynig.bezoogle.com/pp/popup-blocker/. If you’re not interested in buying anything, then merely go to inform yourself.

I believe strongly that the annoyance of pop-ups can be stopped, but only using the best quality software. Take my advice and you won’t be bothered anymore.

I thank you very much for reading my article, and look forward to your visits on my sites.

We’re always looking for good, reliable and affordable solutions to safe and secure computing online and off, so I was pretty impressed with an article I just came across from Tim Brendel on DIY spyware removal for Windows users.

It doesn’t take you through a step-by-step process, but provides the basic foundation knowledge you would need on spyware to begin researching options for yourself.

.

Windows Spyware Removal – Do It Yourself & Save Money

by Tim Brendel

If you have a PC powered by Microsoft Windows, you more than likely have, or will experience spyware. In a nutshell, Spyware is an unwanted program that is installed onto your computer to intercept or take partial control over the user’s interaction with the computer, without the user’s informed consent. It is installed and runs without your permission in an attempt to gain statistics about your internet surfing habits. Spyware creators do this so that they can hopefully see what websites you frequently visit, and then advertise to you with related topics.

For example, let’s say you are shopping for a new vehicle. You visit a few websites, collect your needed information and move on. Suddenly, you get pop-ups, emails, etc. all related to purchasing a new vehicle! Another reason these spyware makers may do this, is an attempt to improve their software that you have already installed willingly. Yes, Microsoft & Adobe (the makers of the Flash Player and Adobe Reader) have, and still do use these spying programs to gain a better understanding of their target market. Spyware infections can get pretty nasty. If you have experienced an issue related to spyware, then there is a 90% chance that the rogue program isn’t alone on your computer. You more than likely have several other infections.

This is because of spyware Trojan Horses. They are installed onto your computer, then they go out and download and install other spyware programs, all without your consent or knowledge! This should be illegal, however the powers that be have realized that spyware makers are very sneaky, and do in fact deceptively get users to give consent to installing their software. They do this by providing little check boxes in a pop-up that read something along the lines of: “Click Here If You Accept the Terms and Conditions”. Does anyone ever read those terms? Short answer -

NOPE!

The good news is that Spyware is definitely not permanent, and in most cases can be removed quite easily if the infection isn’t that bad. You can take your PC to a repair shop, but be prepared to pay high dollars for this service. The going rate for reputable computer repair is upwards of $125 per hour, and spyware & virus removal services can take 2 to 3 hours or more. Sometimes, the other and most effective option is to backup your important data and reinstall your Windows Operating System from scratch. If you do end up having to go this route, you should know that your computer will be “like-new” when you get it back. Meaning, you will have to reinstall your printer, your internet software, and your favorite programs, etc. The up side to that is, there will be zero spyware or viruses when you get it back!

I found this article online and thought it worth republishing (with full permission) for readers here because it’s a pretty good guide for getting rid of spyware from your PC.

How Remove Spyware Removal Guide for Increased Computer Security

Spyware is a type of software that gets installed on your computer that collects information about you and your computer habits and sends this information back to its masters. The most malicious of these programs will actually steal important personal information like passwords, credit card numbers, financial information, and anything else that may be stored on your computer. If this sounds scary and you want to do something about it it is time to learn the ins and outs of how remove spyware.

The first thing you need to do before you remove spyware removal is determine if you indeed have some form of this malware on your PC. There are several ways of doing this.

• The first is to use your built in Windows Task Manager to see if there are any unfamiliar programs running on your computer. To access this feature pres CTRL-ALT-DEL at the same time and click the Task Manager Button. Check under the processes tab to see what programs are currently running. This can be effective if you are computer savvy and know what you are looking at.
• You should also check your startup list to see which programs are running at the time of a reboot. Click Start-Run and type msconfig and click OK. This will list out all running programs, some of which may be spyware.
• The best way to determine if you have a spyware infection is to use a dedicated spyware removal tool or program to scan and remove any malware from your system.

Removal of spyware is an important part of any computer security program. We all know that virus protection is important but spyware and adware should be considered just as dangerous. For this reason it pays to have a dedicated spyware removal program that not only scans for infections but also actively blocks these malware programs from ever getting into you computer in the first place.

Prevention is the best defense against spyware. Protecting you computer can be done quite easily if you keep the following things in mind.

• Keep your software up to date and always choose latest security patches
• Adjust your Internet explorer security settings
• Don’t forget to implement firewalls
• Try something other than Internet Explorer like Firefox or Opera
• Whenever you’re going to download software from a website read all security warnings, privacy statements and license agreement carefully.
• Be alert while downloading some free music and movie file sharing programs because these are main source of spyware.

Every time we get online we risk the security of our computers as well as our personal privacy and financial security.

From “script kiddies” who get their kicks from malicious behavior to highly educated hackers that are well funded by criminals who can afford the best when they steal it… someone is almost always trying to access your computer and your information.

But we don’t enjoy sounding like prophits of doom, and you can spend time online in relative safety with the right information and tools.

We hope you know these already, but if not here are a few rules for safe Internet usage:
1. Never share passwords
2. Never share personal information on insecure sites (look for the security lock icon in your browser to ensure a web site requesting your information has the appropriate security protocols in place)
3. Never download files attached to an eMail message unless you know and trust the sender
4. Never follow links from eMail messages if you don’t know the sender
5. If you do follow a link from an eMail message and the web page asks for a username or password don’t enter it. Even if the web page looks legitimate, it may be fake. This is called Phishing and is commonly used by crooks to get your passwords.
6. Be midful of what information and images you place on social web sites such as MySpace or Facebook, and also watch what information and images your children place on their pages. Think about how much what you’re sharing really tells about you and where you live, and how that information could be used by someone with malicious intent. What may seem like an innocent picture of your daughter’s cheerleading squad could tell a predator exactly what neghborhood you’re from if the school name is on the uniform and your daughter mentions what city you live in on her profile page.

Beyond the information you can control, there is also the task of protecting the information you don’t necessarily control. The biggest step to doing this is having a reliable and updated Internet Security suite installed on your system that will block intruders from gaining access to your computer and files.

There are plenty of options out there and we’re not going to review them all. I’ll say that the old saying of “you get what you pay for” should be kept in mind when selecting one. The types and number of threats that exist online are growing every day, so the companies that can afford to keep up with them are the companies that can provide you with the best security.

We love to promote free and open source software whenever possible, but unfortunately when it comes to threat protection the people behind those or low priced options are understandably behind the pack in every case we’ve looked at. They just can’t afford to stay as current as the larger suites.

We’ve used several different security suites over the years, changing brands whenever we find one that we feel is better than what we’re already using, and for some time now our suite of choice has been Computer Associates Internet Security Suite.

It’s easy to setup and use, and we’ve been completely happy with the protection it provides.

This isn’t meant to be an endorsement of CA’s Internet Security Suite, I’m just sharing our thoughts on it, but you should look at multiple options before picking a suite and decide what’s right for you.

If you do want to try CA’s we’ve found a coupon that gives you 15% off on CA’s Internet Security Suite Plus 2008- Enter coupon code CAISS15 during checkout.
